Conduct civil construction excavator operations


Course Overview

This unit covers the conduct excavator operations in the civil construction industry. It includes:


  • Planning and preparing

  • Conducting machine pre-operational checks

  • Operation of an excavator including loading, bulk excavation, backfilling, trench excavation, stockpiling, battering and benching

  • Lifting, carrying and placing materials

  • Selecting, removing and fitting attachments

  • Relocating the machine

  • Carrying out machine operator maintenance

  • Cleaning up


Competency Assessment

It is recommended that participants with experience bring evidence of time spent on the excavator for your trainer to assess. If you are deemed competent by the Trainer/Assessor at the course you will be issued a statement of attainment. Participants that have had minimal to no experience on an excavator will be required to go on a log book to gain experience prior to assessment as this is a competency based course.


Materials provided

Course Training Manual and support material, log book and training plan.


Protective Clothing

Steel cap work boots and appropriate clothing is required for the duration of the course.



2 x 8 hour days for up to 6 persons per course



14 Neil Street, Gladstone (off Callemondah Drive behind the Gladstone Airport). 
Follow the signs to classrooms.



  • Participants must be over 18 years of age.

  • Identification such as QLD drivers licence, 18+card or birth certificate will be required.


Anyone found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be asked to leave the course.
