Basic Rigger Course

CODE: OHSCER220A

Training Content

During the training course, students have direct access to the required plant and equipment used in the basic work application such as erection of steel structures, chain blocks and other lifting equipment. The course is specifically developed to provide the legally required formal training as well the opportunity to gain practical experience. It is conducted in accordance with Australian Standard 2550.1[1993], 2550.1[1995], and the National OH&S Standard for Uses and Operators of Industrial Equipment [NOHSC:1006 (1995) and the regulations as required by WH&S.

Topics Covered in Training include:
  • Steel erection - winches, fleet angles
  • Lifting purchases, sheaves & calculation of loads
  • Calculation of counterweight required for cantilever beams
  • Safety nets
  • Cantilevered crane loading platforms
  • Material hoists
  • General rigging appliances & fittings
  • Packing, securing & moving loads
  • Rope knots & splicing
Assessment

It is a legal requirement that applicants undertake formal training and obtain workplace experience before the final assessment can be undertaken. The practical assessment will be conducted once you have achieved 120 log book hours. Please note you have 6 months to log these hours.

Materials provided

Course training manual and support material, whistle, gloves, log book and training plan.

Protective clothing

Steel cap work boots and appropriate clothing is required for the duration of the course. If possible please bring your own helmet and safety glasses (safety equipment will be provided if required).

Duration

4 x 8 hour days for up to 8 people.

Location and start time

Course starting time is 8.00am, at the Gladstone TAFE College on Derby Street, South Gladstone. Please be waiting in the canteen area by 7.45am where a Gladstone Job Skills trainer will meet you.

Pre-requisite
  • Completion of the Dogger Course.
  • Participants must be 18 years of age or over.
  • Identification such as QLD Driver Licence, 18+card or Birth Certificate will be required.

Anyone found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be asked to leave the course.
